closet re-do…

I followed through! It ended up being a much bigger project than I intended, but I am so happy with the results! Here’s the process in photos:

img_3806-web The “before” shot. When Tom and I were looking at houses, we each had 3 non-negotiables in a new to us house….one of mine was a walk-in closet. When we looked at this house, the first thing I noticed about the master bedroom was that it didn’t have a walk-in closet. It did have 2 identical closets like the one above. I thought it would be a sacrifice. It’s ended up working out much better than either of the walk-in closets our previous houses had. The only thing I really miss from our last closet is the custom shoe organizer that Tom made for me. He customized a large shelf by adding more narrow shelving that perfectly housed 50 pairs of shoes. It was heavenly. But other than that, our large walk-in wasn’t efficient at all. I could never find anything. So, in case you are like me and think you have to have a walk-in closet, rethink the bi-fold door wall closet. It has really worked out well for us. We each have our own space, which is a very good thing!

img_3808-web It had to get messier, before it could get better. Something happened when I emptied my closet out. I saw how badly the walls needed to be painted. I also noticed the nasty popcorn ceiling. So I did what I do when I get into a project, I made it an even bigger project and removed the texture on the ceiling, then painted it and painted the walls and trim too. It is so fresh and nice now! I’m soooo happy I didn’t just settle for purging.

While the paint was drying, I went to Walmart (we don’t have a Target in town) and picked up more flocked hangers and a shoe organizing shelf.

img_3825-web I love the smell of paint. I am always so gratified by the difference a simple coat of paint makes. I used paint that we already had. That feels good too.

img_3827-web I realize that it’s not a super dramatic change, but to me, having this area all fresh and clean and purged feels awesome! I also have a huge pile of clothes to either give away or take to the consignment store. Getting rid of some really great stuff…it was brutal! So if you are interested in checking out what I’m getting rid of, let me know! Otherwise, it is going bye-bye in a day or two. Getting just this one area of my home organized has energized me and I can’t wait to do more!

Here’s the breakdown:

1 full day of work.

$110 on hangers and shoe shelf

Was it worth it? YES!!! My next project just might be my bathroom….popcorn ceilings and gold fixtures need to go away!

Things that I discovered as I was going through each piece of clothing….

I have more than 1 or 2 little black dresses

I have a lot of hoodies

I only have 3 pairs of dress pants that fit.

I will be working out more.

Who knew that a closet re-do could have such an impact! You know I’m a little sarcastic, right?  But I am truly happy with the results!

I do have a photo session to share peeks of. My friend Tammy is now a grandma. I love when my friends become grandmas and “get” what I’m so crazy about! Her son Mike is a friend too….as well as his wife Rachel. Mike and Rachel got married a few weeks after Jared and Beth….and now they have a baby boy named Matthew. They are such sweet parents to this adorable baby boy!

img_2819-web Seeing this image makes me think of Grey….he still sleeps in this position.

img_2925-web Such sweetness. This young family makes my heart swell…they are so loving and making choices to give their baby a good life.

This morning I read a couple of blog posts that Mandie has recently shared. I am so impressed by her attitude, and particularly in this post. Her guest blogger Tiny Twigs’ post today about community is awesome too! I know so many young families who need to read this! Don’t give up when you’re looking for a good church! Even the most wonderful people in a church won’t always reach out the first time….be tenacious in your search and don’t expect others to be perfect. If it’s important to you to be a part of something really special, you have to be in it with your whole heart and not give a little and then expect others to do most of the “work”. I think that applies to friendships too. Give a lot, expecting little….and usually you’ll be surprised by how much others respond to your efforts. It may take time. But it’s so worth it to build long lasting strong relationships.

God bless your day!

Tiffany - Wow, makes me want to do the same. I’ve got some funky shapes and ceiling ridge/valley in my closet so it’s gonna be a chore. I would love your clothes you are getting rid of, i adore your style. i would be willing to pay for the shipping if you send me the whole schmear of things you are casting aside. Let me know if that is agreeable to you, i could give you my fedex or ups account number.

Tammy - This are WONDERFUL Becky! Thank you so much. I found myself talking “baby talk” to all of the photos! Thank you for doing such a marvelous job of capturing our new little grandson! Just when I think he can’t possibly get any cuter, I’m proven wrong! You are a skillful and sensitive photographer and a find friend!

mandie - Thanks so much Becky- I had no idea you even read my blog. 🙂 God’s doing something in me & I’m not always the best at communicating it, but I’m trying, regardless. 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

Tammy - Hey Becky, Chuck got all teary-eyed when he saw the photos of baby Matt!

Ann - Hi Becky,

As usual you inspire me…I too will be cleaning out my closet and will have sizes 10 and 12 if anyone is looking…and organizing again my scarpbooking. Awesome phots!

Gina - Looks great. I feel inspired to work on mine. I normally get into it this time of year too. I keep my shoes in shoe boxes but I could probably get rid of some. Thanks for the motivation! 🙂 The photos are so precious too. Just makes me want to kiss him and smell him. 😉

Nancy Naylor - You go girl! So happy that you can experience that wonderful
sense of satisfaction! Looks great

Keshet - I was JUST thinking about organizing my closet and getting matching hangers, and was wondering how much it would cost–so this post was right up my alley!
